Daughter of Smoke & Bone
3.5 StarsWhen I started this book my initial reaction was:

Then I was absolutely amazed by how unique the story was. I've read paranormal books before, but Daughter of Smoke and Bone was like no other. Then came Issa.

To be honest, I nearly had to stop reading. I liked Issa's character but I hated the resulting imagery. Issa represents my worst fear. I dislike them so much that I won't even mention the name of those creatures. They send me in to fits of panic, so it was quite a feat to continue reading. Thanks a lot Issa....
I kept reading though, and I'm glad because the first half of the book was nothing short of amazing. AMAZING.
Here's why it gets 3.5 stars from me.
I was bored out of my mind during the second half of the book. All that I could think about was, "I suffered through Issa for this?" A walk down memory lane is one thing but couldn't it have been condensed just a little? There was no excitement or tension. The overall plot didn't move along at all. I was very aware of the outcome beforehand, so a nice little flashback would have sufficed.
I'm not sure if I will continue on to the next book. Curiosity will probably get the best of me though.
